tree/shrub planting

Native trees and shrubs — planted right

From a single backyard tree to large-scale municipal planting, we supply and install native trees and shrubs suited to Southern Ontario's ecosystems — and we stay on to make sure they thrive.

WHY TREES AND SHRUBS MATTER

More than shade.
More than scenery.

Native trees and shrubs are the backbone of a healthy ecosystem. They provide habitat for birds and wildlife, filter stormwater, stabilize soil, and support the insects and pollinators that keep everything else alive. In a region where so much of that natural infrastructure has been removed by development, by invasive species, by decades of lawn culture — putting it back matters.

A well-placed native tree is one of the most lasting things you can do for your property and your neighbourhood. It grows in value, ecologically and aesthetically, every single year.

our approach

Successful tree planting starts long before anything goes in the ground. We assess your site - soil type, sun exposure, moisture levels, available space and select native species suited to those specific conditions. A tree planted in the wrong place won't thrive, no matter how well it's installed.

We handle everything from soil preparation and planting to staking, guarding, and mulching. And for clients who want ongoing support, we offer multi-year maintenance programs to ensure every plant gets properly established.

what’s included

  • We source and install native trees and shrubs suited to your specific site and project specification— plugs, seedlings, potted stock or wire basket.

  • Where needed, we prepare and amend the soil before planting to give every tree the best possible start.

  • All planted trees and shrubs are mulched to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce competition from weeds.

  • Multi-year maintenance available including watering, brush cutting, infill planting, and deer exclusionary fencing for larger sites. We've managed planting programs for municipalities, conservation authorities, and private landowners across Southern Ontario.

Burlington / Rambo Creek - 2022

After a culvert was reconstructed, Sustainable Roots came in to restore the natural area surrounding the work zone. We planted 200 large native trees (50-60mm caliper in wire baskets, for those who want to get technical) and 1800 native shrubs throughout the area to prevent erosion. It was some of the hardest digging in the Burlington clay, but we are very happy with the result!

  • "Andy and Reid are immensely knowledgable and experienced with both invasive species removal and replanting native alternatives. Sustainable Roots is a trustworthy company committed to regenerative practices. These guys are on the forefront of the transition to ecological landscaping!"

    Jocelyn - Orangeville

  • "They designed and installed fantastic native plant gardens for me. I was super pleased with the quality of their service. Very professional, responsive and reliable. Highly recommended!"

    Lisa - Toronto

  • "Finding owners Andy and Reid extremely knowledgeable, courteous, and professional, we went to work designing and planting the entire front yard in predominantly native and pollinator and wildlife-friendly plants and shrubs. The team placed logs to surround and contain the garden with a path of mulch crossing through the garden, adding to the natural feel of the garden. Our latest project involved removing and containing invasive species and doing another round of planting, this time in the backyard."
