invasive species management

Practical, responsible invasive plant management

Invasive species spread fast and get harder to manage every season you wait. We identify what you're dealing with, build a plan suited to your site and budget, and get it under control — responsibly.

why invasive species are a problem

Invasive plants don't play by the same rules as native species.

They spread aggressively, outcompeting native species for light, water, and soil and the longer they're left, the harder and more costly they become to address.

In Southern Ontario, species like dog-strangling vine, Japanese knotweed, garlic mustard, goutweed, and phragmites are quietly taking over gardens, ravines, and green spaces across the region. They're not just a nuisance, they actively displace the native plants that local pollinators, birds, and wildlife depend on.

The good news is that with the right approach, managed well and early, most infestations can be brought under control and the space reclaimed for something that genuinely belongs there.

our approach

We always explore non-chemical solutions first.

Manual removal, smothering, and targeted cutting can manage many species without herbicide and that's always our preference.

When chemical treatment is the right call, we're fully licensed and insured for herbicide use in Ontario. Every management plan is tailored to the specific plant, the scale of the problem, and your ecological goals. We're not just removing weeds, we're working toward a healthier, more resilient ecosystem in their place.

step 05
follow-up

Many invasive species require monitoring and repeat treatment over time. We'll advise on what's needed and can schedule return visits accordingly.

step 02
Site visit

We visit to identify the species and assess the scale of the problem. This step is required before any quote can be given.

what’s included

  • Manual removal for species that can be managed without herbicide. Effective for smaller infestations and species that respond well to repeated cutting or hand-pulling.

  • Licensed herbicide application for invasive trees and shrubs where required. Cut-and-stump treatment to prevent resprouting, carried out by fully licensed and insured applicators.

  • We offer volunteer and team-building events built around invasive removal and native planting — a hands-on way for organisations and neighbourhoods to give something back. Get in touch or visit our Workshops & Events page for details.

  • "Andy and Reid are immensely knowledgable and experienced with both invasive species removal and replanting native alternatives. Sustainable Roots is a trustworthy company committed to regenerative practices. These guys are on the forefront of the transition to ecological landscaping!"

    Jocelyn - Orangeville

  • "They designed and installed fantastic native plant gardens for me. I was super pleased with the quality of their service. Very professional, responsive and reliable. Highly recommended!"

    Lisa - Toronto

  • "Finding owners Andy and Reid extremely knowledgeable, courteous, and professional, we went to work designing and planting the entire front yard in predominantly native and pollinator and wildlife-friendly plants and shrubs. The team placed logs to surround and contain the garden with a path of mulch crossing through the garden, adding to the natural feel of the garden. Our latest project involved removing and containing invasive species and doing another round of planting, this time in the backyard."
